The Festival Artes no Camiño was founded in 2004 thanks to the sponsorship of the Conselleria de Innovación e Industria y S.A. de Xestión do Plan Xacobeo de la Xunta de Galicia. Already in its 4th edition, it could be said that the term “Encuentro” is the one which most exactly defines this Festival since its origin. It was born from the desire and intention to unite into one point, the different paths that human beings choose for the development of what we call art and culture: music, theatre, dance, literature…

The point chosen, covers the Province of Lugo, in the most representative locations on the three routes of the Camino de Santiago (Camiño Francés, Primitivo and del Norte), having as the neurological and spiritual centre of the Encuentro, the Real Abadia Benedictina del Monasterio de Samos, and thus coinciding, intentionally, with the not less important gathering of pilgrims who travel these routes on their way to the Santuario del Apostol.

Three aspects form the bases of this Encuentro-Festival:

The Festival de las Artes brings together all of the artistic offers by groups and personalities of the world of music, theatre and dance, making incursions into other disciplines like the plastic arts and literature. In 2008, apart from the resident group Ars Combinatoria, it has seen performances by groups like Trio Mei, Hippocampus, Zahir Ensemble, Camerata del Prado, Clarino Consort; conductors like Canco Lopez, Alberto Martínez Molina, Tomás Garrido;singers like, Mª del Mar Fdez. Doval, Laura F. Alcalde, Diego Blázquez, Ismael Arróniz, Rachel Elliott, Jordi Doménech, and Jesus G. Aréjula. Among the instrumental soloists were Benjamin Kreith, Tawnya Popoff, Elsa Ferrer, Raul Prieto, Antonella Lorengo and Carlos Cano. With respect to dance, this edition welcomed the groups: ExperimentaDanza, Eudanza, Compañia Y and dancers and choreographers Carlota Pérez, Jurij Konjar, Laura Llauder and Nadia Adame. Theatre was represented by the companies Des-CoNpuesto Teatro, Teatro Dos Mundos, Títeres de María Parrato, La Luciérnaga and Pinchacarneiro and directors Victor Duplá, Roberto White, Mauricio Zabaleta, Angel García and José Colmenero. In this edition, on the ppoetry section were the Colectivo Circulos Líticos and poets Xose Mº Álvarez Caccamo, Isidro Novo, Anton Fortes, Lois Diéguez and Anxo Rigueira Ferreiro.

Another of the bases, of no lesser importance, for the artistic board of Artes no Camiño and which gives strength to the Encuentro, is the educational activity, through the organization of workshops and regular courses, aimed at young Galician artists who are pursueing their studies in any discipline represented in the Encuentro. For that a selection is carried out in the main artistic education institutions in Galicia. The result of this task is presented in the “Festival da Mocidade”, in parallel to the Festival de las Artes, in addition to the organization of open workshops on the region´s own artistic disciplines, as is the case of the Taller de Lhuteria given by Luthiers Xerman Arias and José Catoira. This same intention gave rise to the resident groups of the Festival da Mocidade, like the Nova Orquestra Galega das Artes (NOGA), which, this year, conducted by Canco López presented a monographic programme by Beethoven, performing, among others, the 3a Sinfonía (Heroica), likewise, joined, in the music section, by other groups like DuOdett (violín and piano), the string quartet Catro Cordas, part of the NOGA and the Ensamble Bouché (horn quartet), all holding concerts during the Encuentro. In the dance section, the resident group is Artes en Danza, directed by J. Carlos Zahera and in theatre, No CamiñoTeatro Novo, directed by Víctor Duplá and María Vázquez. This brought about the in-house productions “Movementos en Ruta”, in dance, and “El placer de las pequeñas cosas” in theatre, with various performances being held throughout the Festival.

Likewise, being aware of the importance and influence of the arts during childhood, the Arte para Nenos workshops were organized, in keeping with the arts represented in the Encuentro, no matter whether or not they are pursueing an artistic discipline. In addition to the activities in various disciplines, the “in house” came to fruition as a result of the union of the different arts and as a demonstration of the relationship of coexistence which pervades at the Encuentro.

Midway through this 4th edition, in the Abadía del Monasterio de Samos, a performance called “La Proporción Armónica” was held. This brings together both creatively and actively all the areas and sections of the Festival, from the professional to the educational. It is a multidisciplinary show, that defines the meanig of the Encuentro, and where the combined effort is evident. Thus, the participants were: the NOGA, conducted by Canco López, performing Coriolano by Beethoven, and choreographed by Jurij Konjar. The texts, based on the writings of Arístides, Euclid, Salinas and Séneca, among others, were recompiled and selected by Canco López and Imelda Ferrer and recited by the students from the theatre section , directed by Víctor Duplá and María Vázquez; also aided by the collaboration of the Artes para Nenos workshop, directed by Raúl Prieto. In total , there was a team of about one hundred participants, between students and professors, to produce the show.

Eudanza Corpos en trama (Mondoñedo)

All artistic activity implicitly involves communication and communication must lead to integration. It can be said that art is the essence of the human being and as much the creator as the recipient take part of it. For that reason, all the testaments of sociey must participate in art, without any kind of social discrimination, integrating in it all the most unfavourable social realities whatever its physical, psychological or outcast situation. Artes no Camiño aims for that kind of integration, giving an opportunity to the manifestation of all kind of human realities, and bring its activities to places where access to any kind of art is normally limited. In this way, the following have collaborated with Artes no Camiño: Centro Penitenciario (Monterroso), Centro de Atencion Discapacidad Física (CAMP) (Sarria), Residencia de Ancianos Nª Sra. Del Rosario (Sarria), Hospital Xeral de Lugo, Residencia San Pablo (Mondoñedo), Residencia de Ancians (Ribadeo), Centro de Dano Cerebral de Castro (Castro de Rei) and Fundación ANADE (Lugo).
